Our Future
It doesn’t seem too long ago that Mode was a one man show doing residential renovations in my clients homes. In 2011 the world was still listing from financial ripples of the global financial crisis. Though the tidal waves of debt collapse had passed, I made the decision early on that the fundamental growth of Mode needed to be organic. Mitigating risk through the ownership of our infrastructure over debt obligations. Value over scale, quality over quantity.
Well it’s been 10 years, and we have taken these fundamental ideas, still at the core of Mode and made it through a pandemic, and managed to scale our current operations more in the last two years, than the previous 9.
“If you give me the option of being lucky or good, I’ll take lucky every time”
Some gambler
But what happens when you’re lucky and good? Or maybe even great? What happens when the opportunities that present themselves are just above the current operational capabilities of the business?
Scaling a construction business is not a straightforward endeavour, and it’s where our fundamentals shine. Often it’s too tempting to sign the contracts first, and figure out the execution later. This never works in practice, it is always at the expense of service quality to the client. I have witnessed more of this since the explosion of our industry in Q3 2019 then at any other time in my career.
Our sustainable growth plan is different. We have committed to developing the required infrastructure for scaling prior to tendering a single bid. We have been working on this infrastructure since Q2 2021, and are now ready to implement.
We also believe we can help mitigate the current market risks for our clients. Wild fluctuations in pricing in the materials market, supply chain shock from the pandemic, ever changing restrictions during public health emergencies etc. Though these factors are outside of our control, we believe we are well positioned to smooth out the bumps when executing our projects. We harness these risks in our business model which has always embraced collaboration. Our current excellent long-term relationships with our trades, suppliers, and external contractors give us an advantage.
What our future looks like through our strategic lens:
2022 First to Fourth Quarter
- Scaling in the central Island area, our objective is to increase and maintain market relevance in the central Vancouver Island area.
- Successful completion of Ucluelet Secondary School Project
2023 First to Fourth Quarter
- Mode will have a hard base of operations including shop and office in the central Island area.
- Changes in roles:
- Evan Heitman – Project Manager
- Daniel Allows – Superintendent
2024 First to Fourth Quarter
- Operational Expansion back to the Southern Vancouver Island area market.
2025 onwards
- Mode will be launching a multi trade consultancy to evaluate institutional project plans for owners pre tender. The objective of which is to identify issues and make recommendations to the consultant team to avoid changes during construction that have impacts on cost, and schedule.
- The process will be streamlined using software technology, bit its back bone will be the cumulative decades of experience on site by the tradesmen who have encountered and rectified them. It’s been my experience that this valuable insight can save owners between 5% and 15% on project costs and we will be including case studies in our proposals.
- The gap between the consultants’ communication and coordination seems to be growing. This is partially due to demographics in the professional world, consultant workload, and the continued acceptance in our industry of the concept of “work it out on site”.
- The Coordination that does happen is often misguided and solely focused on achieving the architectural intent. This happens despite the continued advancement of building information modeling software which is a powerful tool when it is used.
