Our Story

Our story started in 2011 by Evan Heitman who earned a reputation for effectively applying his understanding of design specifications to the day-to-day complexities on each job site.  Over the years, we have grown to provide professional construction services, successfully executing projects ranging from structural framing and concrete, heavy timber construction, architectural concrete, custom residential, commercial renovations and new construction.

“Most recently and in collaboration with Unitech Construction Management LTD,  we have successfully completed the Elementary and Secondary School seismic upgrade in Ucluelet BC.  Half of our crew are now working on both residential and commercial projects in Ucluelet and Tofino, while the other half are working in collaboration with Unitech Construction Management LTD in Whitehorse on the General Hospital. ”

Our Company’s Culture

Each member of our team has a deep love for the wild natural world, and small, connected communities. This is why we have had so much success working in smaller more remote communities like Ucluelet, BC.  When our team isn’t working, you will definitely see us out fishing, hiking and connecting in the community.

... Evan has become a member of our community with his love for the back country and fishing. He can often be found with his family fishing or exploring the west coast. Not often do I witness leaders of projects participate and be active in our community.

I understand the importance of good client, trade, and in-house forces collaboration, and using a firm but fair approach to resolve issues and conflicts which has allowed for professional relationships to be built on mutual respect.

Darci McCue

Human Resources Consultant

I have been working to help develop strong foundational business practices and HR policies within businesses for much of my adult career, with a major focus on story telling and brand development.  When I joined Mode in 2021, my focus was on business development, and now that the foundation for the company is strong and the brand is vibrant, my focus is consulting on HR practices.  It is with great pleasure to continue to support the Mode team in a way that fits the vision that Evan has laid out.

John Hughes

Construction Manager

I have been in the construction industry for 24 years. My background is in timber construction, framing, finishing carpentry, and most recently, exclusive general contracting as a preferred contractor for many of southern Vancouver Island’s most sought after interior designers.  I am the owner of Craft Custom Carpentry, and have recently joined Mode’s team to oversee their operations on central Vancouver Island.

James McCaul

Site Foreman

I came to Mode in 2017 after working primarily in residential framing and concrete. Since then I have continued to evolve into a lead carpenter and Site Foreman. I now have 10 years combined experience with the last 4 focused on commercial and institutional work. My skill set has grown to include finishing carpentry and installation of millwork, heavy timber construction and architectural concrete.  I’m experienced in interpreting blueprints to execute the intent of the architect and engineers and feel confident in leading a team of carpenters and laborers to construct as per plans, on time and without re-work.

Samuel Dick

Carpenter

I have been working with Mode for the last year and came with a wide range of experience in many trades.  I am a skilled carpenter and currently, James’ right hand.   I’m also able to fix and maintain tooling and machinery, have experience in commercial roofing and also welding. My greatest asset is the ability to think outside the box with a creative mindset. This allows me to execute complex tasks in unique ways that some would not otherwise think of.

MARY-ANN NYAL

office account manager

I came to work for Mode in the fall of 2022 with the intention of helping them develop strong business practices in the construction, HR and business development field.  I work in the back end of the company supporting the Business Development Manager doing tasks such as project coordination, bookkeeping, general accounting and year end.
